Voices of Freedom

This program featured music by or about people who faced or overcame discrimination and included the world premiere by New Orleans composer Tucker Fuller of “Reading Gaol,” a work for voice, strings and oboe based on the poem of the same name by Oscar Wilde.

The program also included the First String Quartet by Richard Stöhr, a Jewish Viennese composer who was forced by the Nazis to leave Austria in 1938; and the Serenade for strings, harp, flute, and clarinet by William Grant Still, who was the first African-American composer to have a work played by a major American orchestra and also the first African-American to conduct a major orchestra in the Deep South, when he led the New Orleans Symphony in 1955.
